Cosmelan® is a professional topical treatment that helps reduce melanin production and lighten areas of hyperpigmentation.
It is commonly used to treat melasma, age spots, and post-inflammatory pigmentation. The treatment begins with the application of a specialised mask, left on the skin for a prescribed period.
Afterward, a tailored homecare routine using a maintenance cream supports and prolongs the results, helping to achieve a clearer, more even complexion.
Inhibits Tyrosinase: Cosmelan® targets hyperpigmentation by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, which is responsible for melanin production. By reducing tyrosinase activity, melanin synthesis decreases, helping to fade dark spots and even out skin tone.
Professional Application: The treatment starts with an in-clinic application of Cosmelan 1, a mask containing potent depigmenting ingredients. The mask is left on for a specific period, tailored to your skin type and the severity of pigmentation.
Home Care: After the mask is removed, the treatment is continued at home with Cosmelan 2, a maintenance cream that prolongs the depigmentation process and helps prevent dark spots from returning. This step is essential for achieving long-lasting results.
Complementary Products: To protect and support the skin, the use of sunscreen and gentle moisturisers is recommended throughout the treatment.
Dermamelan® is a stronger, more intensive depigmentation treatment designed for stubborn or severe hyperpigmentation.
The process starts with an in-clinic mask application, followed by a tailored homecare routine to maintain results.
With a higher concentration of active ingredients than Cosmelan®, Dermamelan® delivers more potent results, helping to lighten dark spots and even out skin tone safely.
The Dermamelan treatment works in the same way as Cosmelan, however with up to a 30% increase in strength, it is a more potent treatment for severe hyperpigmentation.
The Cosmelan and Dermamelan protocols involve an initial consultation to discuss your skin concerns and treatment goals. This is to ensure the appropriate peel and treatment plan is selected.
For advanced peels, it is vital to adhere to the personalised skin protocol prior to your peel.
You will be advised on specific skincare products to use at home for 2-4 weeks prior to treatment to prepare your skin.
During the in-clinic treatment, the depigmenting masque (Cosmelan 1 or Dermamelan 1) is applied to the skin. This mask is left on for a specific number of hours (8-12), depending on the treatment plan and skin type, then washed off at home.
Each treatment includes a post treatment kit to use for the 30 days immediately after. Regular reviews are required in this timeframe to ensure that your skin is healing optimally.
After 30 days, any stubborn pigment is retreated if required.
After the mask is removed, you will need to follow a strict at-home skincare regimen using a maintenance cream (Cosmelan 2 or Dermamelan 2) to continue the depigmentation process.
Sunscreen and moisturisers are also recommended to protect the skin and enhance results.
Initial improvements are often visible within the first week, with more noticeable results appearing over the following weeks.
Consistent use of the at-home maintenance products is essential to achieve optimal, long-lasting results. While the effects are generally long-term, pigmentation may return due to factors like sun exposure, pregnancy, or medication, in which case repeating the treatment program may be beneficial.
This treatment is suitable for all skin types and tones, but unfortunately not suitable in pregnancy.
Both treatments are suitable for individuals with various types of hyperpigmentation, including melasma, age spots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Most people will see an improvement in their pigmentation approximately 1 month after a Cosmelan or Dermamelan treatment. However, as pigmentation can be present within several layers of the skin, removing 1 layer may reveal deeper pigmentation underneath. For this reason, a consultation is mandatory prior to visualise the differing layers of the skin, and repeat treatment in stubborn pigment sites is complimentary at 30 days.
It is vital that you continue to use your home care products as prescribed as this will ensure that your pigmentation continues to fade and prevent recurrence.
Both Cosmelan® and Dermamelan® can cause temporary redness, mild peeling, and flaking as the skin renews itself. Cosmelan® generally has a shorter recovery period, while Dermamelan®, being more intensive, may involve slightly longer peeling and sensitivity. Most clients can resume normal activities immediately, though visible flaking typically lasts around 5–7 days. Using recommended homecare and sunscreen helps minimise irritation and supports healing.
After Cosmelan® or Dermamelan®, it’s normal to experience redness, swelling, sensitivity, and peeling. Peeling usually begins around 2 days after the treatment and can last up to 7 days. Most clients can return to work after about 3 days and resume normal social activities after a week. These temporary effects are a sign that the treatment is working. Following the recommended post-treatment care helps minimise discomfort and supports optimal results.
For optimal results, most patients will require 1 treatment followed by an ‘at-home’ skin maintenance programme for a minimum of 4 months.
